Depression

New Image Upload “Depression is a debilitating state of mind, mood, feeling, or attitude of hopelessness (despair or joylessness), which becomes a person’s reason for not handling or facing the most important issues in their life.” These are often triggered by traumatic emotional events: such as the loss of a loved one, divorce, the loss of a job, rejection, or any given situation where a solution is not in clear sight.

This word so commonly used in the modern world is not found in the Bible. Nevertheless synonyms such as broken-hearted, down-hearted, forlorn, mourning, sad, despairing, miserable, down cast, discouraged are found.

The Bible speaks much about restoration, forgiveness, love, thanks-giving, a heart of service that can deliver you from the state of depression. Many mighty men and women of God were affected by symptoms of depression as they were challenged beyond their comprehension. An illustration of this is Hannah unable to birth children and it caused her to feel inadequate, mocked and alone yet Hannah did not lose faith in the power of her God to turn the situation around and continued to go before her God for the miracle of child. 1 Samuel 1:19-20, (NIV) “Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah and the LORD remembered her. So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, "Because I asked the LORD for him." A slumped feeling is often caused because of the lack appreciation for knowing that God is control. One must encourage themself by thanksgiving the Lord and knowing He is the one Whom will provide a solution to a dead circumstance.

The Bible says: in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (Amplified) Thank [God] in everything [no matter what the circumstances may be, be thankful and give thanks], for this is the will of God for you [who are] in Christ Jesus [the Revealer and Mediator of that will]. Do not quench (suppress or subdue) the [Holy] Spirit;

The source of joy is hope and trust in what God has done, is doing, and will do to recognise that in the past He has brought you through. A component to liberation from depression is thanks-giving, thinking on positive things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely and of good report.

Philippians 4: 6-8(Amplified). It is placing your hope in God and not in people. Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honourable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them].

A contributing factor to depression is a heart of un-forgiveness; it is like a poison that triggers anger, bitterness and resentment. Seeking forgiveness and forgiving can be liberation from the past and help bring about a heart of peace.

It is also important to be around people of Faith who will speak life into your being, encouraging you in prayer and standing with you without condemnation. It is a change in mind set to know that nothing can keep you depressed unless it is by your own consent.

The Lord is able to heal, restore, forgive, build you to success, there is nothing God cannot fix no matter how bad, selfish, fearful the situation can be. He is God and you are able to do all things through Christ who strengthens you.
